Friday Reads: Evertrue by Brodi Ashton!!

I'm starting this week's Friday Reads with a book that was a very awaited one, that I preordered as soon as it was available for it on my Kindle app. It's another one of those final books in a series/trilogy and had that very bittersweet feeling to it.

Evertrue (Everneath, #3)Evertrue by Brodi Ashton

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

As with every final book in a series, there's a bittersweet feeling for me reading Evertrue. I had preordered it so I had it download onto my Kindle app right on release day but I knew that I wasn't at the right emotional place to read it.

Finally a week later, I felt ready for it and dived right into it. I read it in one sitting at night and as expected, it was full of feelings and not quite what I expected. Since it's the final book of the trilogy, do expect some spoilers for previous books, but I will do my best to keep it spoiler free for Evertrue itself.

We start quite right where we were left on Everbound. With Nikki and Jack back, and Nikki reeling from Cole's treachery and her new (and unwanted) situation. Nikki decides that since she doesn't want to do what Cole wants her to do, she's gonna bring down the entire system.

Nikki was in a very bad place in this book for a different reason than on previous books, she's got a clearer head, she's got Jack with her, and then she got an unexpected ally in Cole, because there's a twist there that left me reeling and I just wasn't expecting at all. Jack is changed by his experience in the tunnels, emotionally and physically but he still does his best job at being Nikki's anchor. Cole... goodness, I don't even know what to say about him without spoiling anything, except that I'm pretty sure you won't see it coming...

Evertrue happens half in the surface and half in the Everneath, plotting & regrouping happens up and all the fighting and action happens down. There's a lot of digging for information, a lot of team work and sacrifices made by everyone, one way or another. And for those who ever wondered at the possible love triangle, it is very definitively resolved. I wasn't expecting it to be solved quite that way, I'm not sure what I wanted or expected (except for Nikki and Jack to finally find a way to heal together) but NOT what happened for sure!

That's probably what made me not give this book a higher rating even if I really enjoyed it and loved the Jack & Nikki moments, and the humour and many other things. How everything got resolved was so unexpected and I was still so confused as to why what happened had happened and why Cole was in that position that despite not being keen about Cole at all in the previous books, I was taken aback and felt a bit cheated.

All in all, a final book on a very unique series that I'd still recommend. 3.5 to 4 stars for this one.
