The Broken Ones by Danielle L Jensen Cover Reveal!!!

Hello there guys!!

The blog has been a bit abandoned as of late, as I'm sure you've noticed, but I'm hoping to recover enough motivation soon enough to start blogging more often and get back in the swing of things, after all, it's not like I've stopped reading at all!

Today I'm cleaning the cobwebs from the blog to take part in a cover reveal I'm extremely excited about!

I've always been a big fan of The Malediction Trilogy by Danielle L Jensen since I read the first book, Stolen Songbird and my love and excitement for the series continued through the next two books, Hidden Huntress & Warrior Witch.

So when Danielle announced that she was writing a prequel all about Marc & Penelope's story, I was beyond happy! I felt so much for Marc and had always wondered about their story, so having the chance to read it now makes this little bookworm very happy!

Friday Reads: Empire of Sand by Teresa Yea!! #DiverseDecember

Hey there guys!

Happy Friday! I work night shift tonight, and again on Sunday so my weekend won't be exactly free, but at least I hope to have some time to read at work!

For this week's Friday Reads I have a prequel on a NA fantasy series that I'm quite in love with! If you haven't heard of Teresa Yea or Love in a Time of Monsters, do yourself a favour and check them out!
This book is also part of my Diverse December list and so far I'm not doing too shabby with it!

Empire of Sand by Teresa Yea

My rating: 4 of 5 stars


I discovered the previous book in this series (and debut book from the author) thanks to my friend Jenny from Supernatural Snark because she designed the amazing cover. I loved it since it was one of those very rare NA fantasy, so when I heard that a prequel was coming out, and saw this very gorgeous cover, I knew I needed it!

Empire of Sand is from Liam's POV, first person and it was done so very well! Teresa doesn't shy away from showing us some of Liam's past and how he came to work for Hyde, as well as see how twisted he is by the hunt and his love for it.

You don't really need to have read Love in a Time of Monsters to read this one, since it's a prequel, but I feel that it will add a lil bit something extra. But if you read this one, do read LiaToM afterwards!

Liam is not an easy character to like but also not as easy to hate as you might think. He's a bit of an arsehole more often than not, but I suspect there's something that has been seriously twisted within him for a long time and his love for the hunt for the sake of it is how it manifests (for the most part). There's a lot of self loathing about himself, his sexuality and his lust for the hunt and being in his head is quite the trip!

Meeting Cat/Kitty as a character in need of growth compared to the one we had met in LiaToM was quite an experience and even more since this provides a lot of backstory to the history that was hinted at before, between her and Liam. Cat is already messed up, trying to become a hunter and getting even more messed up.

There's plenty of blood, hunting, monsters and messed up relationships with sex and without it between the characters. None of them are the nicest of people and in extreme circumstances it really shows.

The world building and descriptions were perfectly visual to make us feel like we were there, in the desert, crunching sand between our teeth and scared shitless about a monster that felt a mix of an Egyptian God and a Stargate alien!

LiaToM made me fall in love with Teresa's writing and this world she had created, as well as her very flawed and very complex characters, Empire of Sand has just reinforced that and now I'm left waiting and hoping for the next book to come, because I need more!

If you like fantasy, give this series a try! Very much deserved 4 stars!

I loved Teresa's Love in a Time of Monsters and so when I heard she had a prequel and saw that cover (done by my dear friend Jenny from Supernatural Snark & Seedlings Design Studio) I knew I needed to read it ASAP! And the perfect excuse (so to speak) arrived when I decided to focus only on books written my BAME authors for Diverse December!

Why am I eagerly awaiting Fairest? Well, I'm a BIG fan of the Lunar Chronicles series, and even if I'm dying even more for the final book of the series, I cannot wait to get my preorder of this one, a prequel that tells the story of Queen Levana, and books about villains are always quite interesting!!

Friday Reads: Mini Review of Summerfall by Claire Legrand!!

Hello guys! Happy Friday and welcome to another edition of Friday Reads!

This week I'm failing a bit at reading, but since I've only had one day and a half off and I had to get ready an order of cupcakes, I feel like I can be dispensed... I am trying to catch up now, and hopefully during the weekend!

I'm starting with a mini review for a prequel novella that I adored and really made me look forward to the full lenght book!



Summerfall: A Winterspell Novella by Claire Legrand

My rating: 4 of 5 stars


When I first heard of this prequel novella for Winterspell, I preordered it as soon as it was up for it on Amazon. Then I got approved via Edelweiss for Winterspell and I kept wondering if I should read it or wait for the novella, and in the decided to wait. And it turns out it was the right choice!

Summerfall is a prequel and as such we are introduced to the world of Cane and to characters that won't probably be in Winterspell, but we are given and insight into the events that shaped what will be going on in the book and we are introduced both to the world of Cane and to Claire Legrand's quite beautiful writing!

Summerfall is the story of Rinka, a naive and sheltered faery that has a fascination for humans in a world were the relationships between both races are not at the best of times. She believes in understanding and getting to know each other to destroy prejudice and restore peace. She finds her chance to meet with the humans and try to work towards peace and soon realizes things are not that easy and soon her life and probably the entire realm's change.

Rinka is a wonderful character that starts as really naive but soon learns that she's way in over her head, but I loved that she never backed down, she took challenges on ahead and wanted to work for peace, even when the road was tough. That she might just loose her head for love and risked everything might seem silly, but it could be seen as another way to show that peace between the two races was possible, if love could be found.

The treachery of power and politics taking advantage of the differences between people and the fear that can generate is nothing now, and seeing it at play in Cane is a dire reminder we'd all do well in taking to heart. Facing the consequences of our choices and not shruging away from responsabilities are also themes explored in this novella.

Quite some strong themes, a good foundation to the world of Cane, well developed characters and a really swoony romance all mixed up make this novella a must read! Now I cannot wait to read Winterspell! Well deserved 4 stars!

Saturday Pages: Mini reviews of Outcast & Swamp Bones!!

Hello guys!

This week's Saturday Pages is happening a lil latter than usual, but they almost didn't happen... I was extremely tired last night and went to sleep without having any posts ready and today I woke up feeling rather tired still, but I decided to still manage to crank up a pair of novellas reviews that I had pending!

One of them is a novella that I got this week on NetGalley so it will totally count for my ARC August list!

 Swamp Bones: A Novella by Kathy Reichs

My rating: 3 of 5 stars


I've always been a big of both this series by Kathy Reichs and Bones the tv series (at least till I lost interest once the drama got a bit too much for me) even if they were rather different. I had forgotten a bit about the books till I saw this novella on NetGalley and realized I had missed reading one book and there was another coming! So I just got the previous book to this one and preordered the next!

Swamp Bones is a novella that can be read without having read all the Tempe Brennan books since it's a story on its own, but I don't think it's the best of the Tempe stories either.

But even as one of the weakest stories in the mystery sense of the murder(s) to be solved, cause there was a point were the suspect was pointed at too easily, so much that I was expecting it to be a red herring, the story was always fascinating because of the way the science is weaved in. Even if most of the science was about pythons in this one, and snakes are one of my few irrational fears!

Tempe can be a bit too rash and impulsive and given some of the bad situations that has got her into in the past, it makes me wonder why she doesn't seem to learn given how intelligent a character she is. I guess we all have our flaws, and hers is being a bit rash and overly optimistic on outcomes.

All in all, a good enough novella that really got me in the mood to read more Tempe Brennan books! 3 stars to this one (for the too obvious resolution).




Outcast by C.J. Redwine

My rating: 5 of 5 stars


Outcast is the very much awaited novella featuring our dear Quinn and his sister Willow's story before they meet Rachel and Logan and become allies. This is the story of why Quinn understands how broken Rachel can be and how both he and his sister got exiled from their tribe and came to meet Rachel's dad.

Quinn has always been a very interesting character and we knew there was a lot more to his past than what he himself or his sister had revealed before, both about what caused their exile and why Quinn refused to kill when fighting and in this novella, we find out exactly how horrible their childhood was being trained to be killers with the excuse of being defenders, and how abusive their relationship with their father was.

We see Quinn from feeling like what they're doing is wrong, to finding the strenght to face his father and try to put a stop to his madness when he thinks of protecting his sister and finds an unexpected ally on Rachel's father when Jared stumbles onto the village's perimeter trying to hide from Rowansmark agents.

For a short novella this one packs a really emotional punch and we find ourselves loving and understanding much better both Quinn and Willow and even get a lil better understanding of what a good man Rachel's dad was. One of those novellas that are a joy to read, even with the tough themes in it which earns it 5 stars.
