Saturday Pages: Mini Reviews: The Rest of Us Just Live Here, An Ember in The Ashes & Winter!!!

Hiya there!

How's your Saturday going? I hope the weekend is going well! I work this weekend so I plan to be really lazy and not do much other than that!

For this week's Saturday Pages I have a bunch of mini-reviews because I have been in a rather massive reiew-writing slump and I feel that mini-reviews are much more manageable and less imposing that having to write a looong review, even more when I really loved all these books and sometimes when you really love a book, it's harder to find the coherent words for it!

I feel like I have mostly abandoned (& FAILED!) my challenges for this year, but since one of the books is a debut, I'm totally counting it towards my 2015 Debut Author Challenge!

An Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir

My rating: 4 of 5 stars


It took me a while to read this book because I started it when the hype was at its peak and for some reason it didn't seem to grab me at the time. I decided to set it back down for a while and it was the right call. Now that the hype is gone (and I know for sure there is a sequel coming) I picked it up again and simply devoured it!

An Ember in the Ashes is told in dual POV, Elias and Laia, both part of this reimagined Roman Empire-ish world, one an Elite soldier, the other one of the oppresed & conquered, both looking for freedom and both stuck in a situation where they cannot reach it.

The world is brutal, the military training is brutal, slavery is brutal, the power plays are brutal and there are so many characters driving their own agendas without regard of others that is a wonder how some of them remain human. There's also a magical feel to the world bulding and the world, some glances at beauty and freedom and happiness that are the best motivators for the characters.

Elias and Laia's fights are very different from each other, Laia's trying to fight for her brother and trying to find acceptance of herself and finding her courage. Elias is trying to keep his individuality and his soul/conscience in a brutal world he never wanted to be part of.

And then we have the bigger picture issues, with the Trials, a new Emperor needed and the war that is coming towards the Empire and the humans that was foreseen but no one seems to remember.

The book can feel like its own story sorted but the ending has so many open threads unsorted and unfinished that it NEEDED a sequel, and I'm so very glad we'll be getting it! Not soon enough, because sequels are never here soon enough unless you're dealing with a finished series.

An Ember in the Ashes is a stunning debut! With magical writing, fantastic world building, imperfect & believable character with great development and neck-breaking pacing! Very well deserved 4 to 4.5 stars!




The Rest of Us Just Live Here by Patrick Ness

My first Patrick Ness book and I am simply in love! This book is both funny and poignant, reflecting on what it is to try to get through normal life with whatever challenges it may throw at us, showing us what mental health issues can look like without ridicule but with enough humour so it wouldn't feel hopeless.

I love Mikey, I love Mel, I love Jared and I love Henna. They felt complex and genuine and raw and real. They felt very much human. I flipped the book open to check it out and I simply continued reading till I was done with it. Laughing and tearing up and simply loving it to bits!

This book had a strong sense of tongue in cheek humour when it dealt with the paranormal cliches of the "chosen ones" stories, but the focus was always more in the regular lives that the "rest of us" normal people have to deal with, even if we also saw how the events could affect the normal lives as collateral, without really being sure what the hell is going on.

I cannot really write a coherent and good enough review for this book because it has so many different aspects and genres and themes all mixed up and they all work together flawlessly!

This was my first Patrick Ness book and I think it won't be the last. If you haven't checked it out yet, don't fear the hype and go read it, it's very much worth it! Very well deserved 5 stars!



Winter by Marissa Meyer

Oh boy, what a wild ride this was!! And what a lovely book hangover is to be expected now because I really don't want to say goodbye to these characters!!

I'm not sure how to even begin to review Winter... I finished it yesterday and I still don't think I have enough coherent words! The wait was very much worth it and mostly all I can say is that I loved it and *ALL THE FLAILS*

First of all, I must give mad props to Marissa Meyer because she ALWAYS manages to make this romancephobe ship all her ships like there's no tomorrow! Cinder & Kai, Wolf (Ze'ev) & Scarlet, Cress & Thorne (oh boy these two were killing me in this boooook!!!) and Winter & Jacin!! From first attraction to alpha insticts, online crushes to long time friendship & love, she manages to make it work and root for the characters like mad!

As the final book of the series where all things come to an end, I was expecting planning and plotting and scheming and confrontation, but the amount of emotional ups and downs and the tension that the whole book managed to mantain for its over 800 pages is mind-blowing! I couldn't read fast enough and the book never felt long!!

I love the growth and development that the characters had in this one, even Winter we had barely ever met before, we get to know her and understand and feel so much for her, with her insanity born of kindness and a desire to do what's right and never harm anyone!

And as always, Marissa Meyer managed to weave some bits of the original fairty tale here and there, wonderful easter eggs/winks that I loved finding along the book! So well weaved into the story and the world she's created!

I... I just have no more words, and I'm already babbling!. Just, read it! It's brilliant! 5 very MUCH deserved stars!

Saturday Songs & Pages: #TLCReadAlong: Scarlet by Marissa Meyer!!

Today I'm a mixed up sort of post since I was feeling quite unmotivated to write yet another review... so I got an idea for this post!

It's a mix of my usual Saturday posts, Saturday Song and Saturday Pages! I'll have a mini review of my re-read of Scarlet for the #TLCReadAlong and also a few songs that made me think of the characters!

To begin with, I'm sharing a song that I feel it's perfect for these amazing retellings, because they are familiar versions of a Once Upon a Time story but they're amazing stories on their own! (and I LOVE this song from the Maleficent movie!).

Scarlet (The Lunar Chronicles #2) by Marissa Meyer

I remember being rather unhappy about how the focus in the book kept changing from Cinder to Scarlet the first time I read the book, before I realized that was how the series was, both consecutive/sequel like books but also with different main characters (and couples) at the head of each book, adding to the cast and the team, making the world richer and the plot even more complex!

So this time around I was ready to read again about Scarlet and Wolf with a different mindset and I found myself liking Wolf almost from the get go, and getting to warm up to Scarlet so much easily too! She's got quite a temper and I feel like teen-Pili would have related with her throwing tomatoes at the wall so much!

I have once again realized that I had forgotten quite a few details but holy cow! I totally had forgotten about some bigger things that I cannot mention because SPOILERS but damn, I'm so glad I re-read this before Winter! 

I also found that I had a few more issues with how Scarlet and Wolf's relationship progress, mostly in the time frame it takes place... somehow I don't think I felt it went too fast as much as I did this time. I can understand that for Wolf it is more of a primal thing, an Alpha finding his mate, but for Scarlet? Even after knowing what I know about her... it doesn't make the same sense for me. But by the end of the book I'm once again totally onboard with the ship and I find them so adorableee!!

Dear Captain Thorne, I had forgotten how conceited and irritating he read from Cinder's POV, since I got used to him being a lil different and seeing him way differently from Cress' POV! But I liked how he quite quickly became an ally for Cinder and how he and Iko ganged up on Cinder whenever Kai is involved!


And now for some more songs!

This Florence +  The Machine song is perfect for the relationship between Scarlet & Wolf, given how primal and visceral it feels at times!







 
This Metallica song is perfect for Wolf, even if it might refer to shape-shift at some point, the title is quite on point!




 

I had the harderst time finding the right song for Scarlet, because she's such a firecracker and strong character... And I think this one is pretty accurate after all! If you have any other suggestions, let me know!






And last but for sure not least I found this song that I'd say would be the perfect fir for Queen Levana! Found it while I was looking for the right song for Scarlet!!

Re-reading for August: #ReadThroneOfGlass and #TLCReadAlong!!

Hello there guys!

Today I don't have a regularly scheduled Saturday Pages review but I'm gonna be babbling about books anyhow because that's what us bookwyrms do when given half a chance!

Before I fell into the rabbit hole of Goodreads and eventually book blogging I still read and devoured books as much as I do now, but since my TBR pile wasn't as life threatening, I used to re-read my favourite books for comfort. There are some books that I must have read over 20 times, like The Eight or Miguel Strogoff...

But since I started discovering so many new books and series and authors I haven't really given myself time to re-read books, and I decided I needed to change that this year.

I've decided to give myself permision to re-read and not worry about the ever growing TBR pile or the ARCs that I get approved for on NG or anything else! Re-reading books that I loved is a joy that I need to allow myself to enjoy more often!

And to nudge myself into it, I decided to join two re-readalongs! #ReadThroneOfGlass and #TLCReadAlong!

The #ReadThroneOfGlass is a readalong or re-readalong to prepare ourselves for the release of Queen of Shadows on September 1st.

I must say, I couldn't be happier that I have joined the readalong!

I finally read my hardcover of Assassin's Blade because I had read the Kindle versions of some of the novellas only, and reading them all one after the other, inlcuding the new one was fantastic! Highly recommended for anyone wanting to start the Throne of Glass series: READ THE NOVELLAS FIRST! They give a much better understanding of Celaena and her character and her career as an assassin and her complex relationship with Arobynn. And we meet some characters that we'll be meeting again in upcoming books, Queen of Shadows onwards!

I read Throne of Glass first and the novellas later, and at first it took me a while to understand Celaena and cheer for her. And then I read the novellas, and I understood her so much better!

Re-reading Throne of Glass was such a different experience, with so many little details that I had not noticed or had forgotten about and that will have such a relevance in the upcoming books! And some definite foreshadowing and hints that I missed on the first read! I loved reading about the interactions between Chaol and Dorian and Celaena and her meeting and growing friendship with Nehemia, her hate for the King and her intense fear of the man... So many things that make sense from the very first moment in a way that the didn't the first time!

The same thing happened with Crown of Midnight, I was so shocked to realize how many important things I might have missed and how I had forgotten about some of the things that happened! Of course that the revelations aren't as shocking, at least not the big ones, but there are plenty of things you read hoping to find more clues that you might have missed the first time, and some are really ominous knowing what we do know now! But even knowing what will happen doesn't lessen the heartache or the pain of the bad things when they happen, and the one thing is that at least I know that Fleetfoot WILL be okay!

Now I am re-reading Heir of Fire and I'm hoping to finish it this weekend so I can have it fresh in my mind when I read Queen of Shadows next week!

The #TLCReadAlong is hosted by Britt from Book Addicts Guide!

To prepare myself to reading Winter when it releases, I decided to join this low pressure read along because I have a month to read each of the books, so I'll manage to squeeze them in between whatever other books from the TBR pile and ARCs I plan to read without worrying about "I should be reading this or that instead of re-reading"!

Cinder was a surprise the first time I read it because a retelling of Cinderella with a cyborg and in a futuristic science fiction dystopia? But this time I already knew what kind of book it was gonna be, so I had less trepidation that let me enjoy the book more. And of course I also managed to notice the lil details here and there that didn't seem as relevant at the time of reading and maybe forgotten when reading the next books.

Some of the obscure mentions make a lot more sense and the first time we meet Cress? My poor adorable Cress! Cinder didn't know what to make of her! And of course the big reveal is not surprising any more, but I think it's fun to see the clues you might have missed at first!

And of course it was simply a joy to read again all the interactions between Cinder and Prince Kai and of course my fave lines had to be the ones by Iko! I still giggle when I think of "Do you think she's seen him in the nude?", her crush on Kai is so delightful!

Now I cannot wait to re-read Scarlet starting next month!! =D

First Class Murder is my reward read right now to motivate myself between ARCs reading and writing reviews. It's a MG murder mystery and I'm loving it so much!

Legacy of Kings... I am quite disappointed with it right now, I'm at 43% and I stopped reading it for a few days because it was feeling too slow and with the 7 POVs, the plot didn't seem to be going anywhere and GAH! I might end up DNFing this one...

Cinder is a re-read! I joined the #TLCReadAlong organized by Brittany from Books Addicts Guide because I want to have the books fresh for reading Winter! Cinder is August book and I've just started it last Sunday. I'm already loving re-reading it!

Friday Reads: Fairest by Marissa Meyer!!

Friday is here and for me is the end of my days off and the start of my working weekend! On Tuesday I went to a meeting for my apartment complex and it was a bit nuts, so on Wednesday I decided to take a full reading day!

For my first Friday Reads entry of the week I have a new release of this year and as such one that counts toward my 2015 release category on my 105 challenge!

Fairest by Marissa Meyer

My rating: 4 of 5 stars


Fairest is one of those extra books that we didn't expect and we didn't think we needed, but once you've read it, you realize that it was a really good idea to add it to the series!

We've hated Levana since pretty much the first time she came onto the page and that hate has continued growing with each book and each revelation of her evil plan, or at least that has been my case.

I was really excited to see Levana's story because I always like villains to have layers to their story, their evilness and their evil plans. I always like to know the reasons and why's of actions of everyone, I prefer a villain that I can understand how in their twisted way they can justify their actions, even if I'll never agree with them. Evil for evil's sake without some grey areas is rather boring for me!

And we do get a lot of background information about Levana and her entire family of psychopaths. I did feel bad for Levana every time she interacted with her sister because if Levana is nuts, Chanary was even worse! We learn about their parents, the lack of familial love in the family and between the sisters. There's quite something about the nature vs nurture in here, but in Levana's case is nature + nurture!

She is born in a family of sociopaths (and probably psycopaths) so she's got both things against her, and although we see her making some better choices here and there and being worried about Luna's welfare... she ends up being true to type and make choices that show her lack of empathy and her delusions that end up in lies that she makes herself believe.

I can understand better how she came to be the cruel and mad queen that we met in Cinder and I was quite glad once the book was over, because being in her head was one hell of a twisted place to be! We also get more background story on Winter's and on princess Selena's pasts and I'm sure all that will help us understand Winter better the next time we meet her.

A great book that would deserve a warning, because getting into Levana's head is not something for the faint of heart, but worth every cringe-worthy moment for the insight that we get and how the fight of our heroines and heroes being even more dire! Very well deserved 4 stars, Marissa Meyer knows how to write and write well ALL sort of characters!

Why am I eagerly awaiting Fairest? Well, I'm a BIG fan of the Lunar Chronicles series, and even if I'm dying even more for the final book of the series, I cannot wait to get my preorder of this one, a prequel that tells the story of Queen Levana, and books about villains are always quite interesting!!

Mark This Book Monday: Cress!!

This week's Mark This Book Monday was once again, one of those very awaited books in an ongoing series, but not the final book. It's also part of my list for the Dystopian Reading Challenge 2014!

Cress by Marissa Meyer

My rating: 5 of 5 stars


I'm not the biggest fan of retellings but when they come on the shape of science fiction/dystopian books and they're done the way Marissa Meyer does them... I just adore them!

I fell in love with the concept and the stories of The Lunar Chronicles when I read Cinder and was very much reinforced on it after reading Scarlet, and now reading Cress... well, this is just an absolute favourite series of mine!

Every book in this series introduces us to a new character or set of characters and this time we are meeting a new version of Rapuntzel. A girl that is brilliant and a hacker and lives isolated in a satellite. She has been helping Cinder before, and she can be a big asset to the team of cyborg Lunar heir, genetically modified Lunar super soldier gone rogue, French girl, charming pirate Captain and more human than robot ship.

Action starts pretty soon and not only that, everything goes not quite as planned, so the team gets split apart all of them in some sort of mortal danger or another. For me, Cress didn't really have many if any dull moments, though I must say I was counting down the pages till everyone could be reunited! It's pretty full of action, character development and some unexpected revelations. By the second half of the book, Cinder has decided to stop running and take the initiative, so they make a crazy plan and go for it!

There are quite a few emotional moments here, and the way Cress is crushing on Thorne is quite adorable. We also discover Thorne is neither as bad as he thinks he is (and most people would think too, I must confess there was a moment when I also thought the worst of him and then it seemed that he was being thoughtful and considerate and wanted to help our dear Iko!) nor as good as Cress has made him seem in her mind. It was something different seeing their relationship evolve and I'm really looking forward to see how it progresses in the next book! Scarlet and Wolf are separated and they don't get as much time in this book, but Scarlet has an encounter with Winter, and it was bizarre, puzzling and very intriguing! Wolf was behaving quite oddly and moody, but some of his behaviours were a bit like those of a dog that has lost his owner, and that is sort of fitting.

Cress was a fantastic read, with plenty of twists, action, new developments and that leaves us really looking forward impatiently for the next book! Can't wait for Winter now! Very much deserved 5 stars!

Why am I eagerly awaiting Cress by Marissa Meyer? Since I discovered Cinder I'm completely in love with this series! Each book is somewhat of a retelling of a well known fairy tale that still is somehow seamlessly fiting into the fantastic science-fiction & dystopian story that The Lunar Chronicles are. After the ending of Scarlet and all the little teasers for Cress and reading the first chapter online... I just cannot wait!!
