Friday Reads: Empire of Sand by Teresa Yea!! #DiverseDecember

Hey there guys!

Happy Friday! I work night shift tonight, and again on Sunday so my weekend won't be exactly free, but at least I hope to have some time to read at work!

For this week's Friday Reads I have a prequel on a NA fantasy series that I'm quite in love with! If you haven't heard of Teresa Yea or Love in a Time of Monsters, do yourself a favour and check them out!
This book is also part of my Diverse December list and so far I'm not doing too shabby with it!

Empire of Sand by Teresa Yea

My rating: 4 of 5 stars


I discovered the previous book in this series (and debut book from the author) thanks to my friend Jenny from Supernatural Snark because she designed the amazing cover. I loved it since it was one of those very rare NA fantasy, so when I heard that a prequel was coming out, and saw this very gorgeous cover, I knew I needed it!

Empire of Sand is from Liam's POV, first person and it was done so very well! Teresa doesn't shy away from showing us some of Liam's past and how he came to work for Hyde, as well as see how twisted he is by the hunt and his love for it.

You don't really need to have read Love in a Time of Monsters to read this one, since it's a prequel, but I feel that it will add a lil bit something extra. But if you read this one, do read LiaToM afterwards!

Liam is not an easy character to like but also not as easy to hate as you might think. He's a bit of an arsehole more often than not, but I suspect there's something that has been seriously twisted within him for a long time and his love for the hunt for the sake of it is how it manifests (for the most part). There's a lot of self loathing about himself, his sexuality and his lust for the hunt and being in his head is quite the trip!

Meeting Cat/Kitty as a character in need of growth compared to the one we had met in LiaToM was quite an experience and even more since this provides a lot of backstory to the history that was hinted at before, between her and Liam. Cat is already messed up, trying to become a hunter and getting even more messed up.

There's plenty of blood, hunting, monsters and messed up relationships with sex and without it between the characters. None of them are the nicest of people and in extreme circumstances it really shows.

The world building and descriptions were perfectly visual to make us feel like we were there, in the desert, crunching sand between our teeth and scared shitless about a monster that felt a mix of an Egyptian God and a Stargate alien!

LiaToM made me fall in love with Teresa's writing and this world she had created, as well as her very flawed and very complex characters, Empire of Sand has just reinforced that and now I'm left waiting and hoping for the next book to come, because I need more!

If you like fantasy, give this series a try! Very much deserved 4 stars!

Review

I was sure I was gonna like this one because I love LeighAnn's writing and storytelling, but I was a bit unsure because NA contemporary is not my go-to genre. But I shouldn't really have doubted that I would less than love this book!

Amy, Arielle and Rion easily crawled into my heart and their heartbreaks felt like mine, as did their struggles and triumphs. I cheered for them, felt like shaking them at times, and loved seeing them step out of their comfort zones and grow so much! Their relationships weren't easy because real things never are, even when they should be, we tend to complicate them.

Amy, Arielle and Rion and three very different girls that find themselves living together and supporting each other on their very first day as roommates after some tough break ups. These three girls have very different pasts, very different objectives and are very different from one another, but they make the choice to support one another and seeing them become friends and grow together and separate as their own person was a joy to read!

Amy was raised in a very strict and deeply religious family and environment, but when all her future plans crumble, she has a crisis of faith and needs to find a way to be herself, do what she wants to do, not what others expect of her and find a relationship with God that is right for her. Being an atheist I was so very happy that Amy's story never felt preachy even if I was very angry on her behalf about the way her family acted and reacted.

Arielle has a wonderful family life with a mum that is supportive and that loves her very much, but she comes to college because of her girlfriend and once the break up happens, she's very much drifting, not being sure of what she wants. She's not much of a fighter and she learns how to go for what she wants and not just let others choose for her.

Rion is the one with the toughest past, the most prickly of the lot and the one that needs to learn how to trust again and how to let others help her. She's been burned before and quite badly, so she does the mistake of letting appearances shape her opinion of someone when she's the first that suffered that before.

There is growth for all three of the girls, as individuals, as part of their own families, as friends and also growth and development in the relationships they form. They need to learn to trust themselves and others, to not judge someone by the mistakes of others and give them the benefit of the doubt.

Full of diversity, sex positive and with amazing supportive friendship tying our main characters together, this is one book I can highly recommend!

If you love NA contemporary, you'll adore this book. If you don't, give this book a try, it might change your opinion! Well deserved 5 stars to this one!

Friday Reads: Love in a Time of Monsters by Teresa Yea!!

Hello there guys!

Friday is here and with it another working weekend looming ahead for me. My brain is on overload thinking and worrying about expenses and the apartment and the plans for BEA... and I have been half tempted to just put the blog on hiatus already, but I shall wait till May 1st to start the official hiatus, minus some blog tour posts that I have scheduled.

For this week's Friday Reads I have a wonderful book that has been flying under the radar and I feel deserves to reach more readers because it's a fantasy NA and it is fantastic! It's counted towards my 105 Challenge for my Fantasy books category!

Love in a Time of Monsters by Teresa Yea

My rating: 4 of 5 stars


I discovered this book through the amazing artist that did the cover (our dear Jenny from Supernatural Snark) and once I read the summary I knew I had to get it and read it.

And I was right, I loved this one so much! I started reading it at work (night shift) and finished it as soon as I got home and got some sleep. I'd describe this as gothic fantasy with retelling elements, because we get references to novels and characters that know, so maybe it's a gothic fantasy retelling of the events that inspired the classics? Something like that!

I loved the world building and how wonderfuly visual the descriptions for everything was, from the landscapes, to the characters, to the feeling of the places and the monsters.

I loved how well crafted the characters are! None of the characters felt too typical or underdeveloped, because from main to secondary, all have more going on that you see at first. Cat is a survivor, a monster hunter, fragile and strong and an addict. She's broken and so very far from perfect, but I loved her to bits even at her worst moments and I loved how Rob always managed to see the best in her and so make her try to be that best. Same with Liam, even if it took me quiet a while to warm up to him, he's a fantastic character, complex and the perfect mix of antihero and villain. And Rob, well... Rob is of course a very complex character, a reluctant hero if there's ever been one, but with enough strenght and love to make others want be better.

The book takes place in a time of monsters, where sirens drag sailors to their death and get hunted for their scales, where monster hunters are necessary and where the most dangerous of all monsters was brought to Scotland to try and save a life. Mixing POVs and moving from past to current events, this story kept me riveted to the pages, wanting to know more, to see what happened and hoping for as few deaths as possible, but the book really doesn't pull any punches, and I had quite a few weepy moments along the book!

Rob is Robert L Stevenson and some of the events in the book inspired him to write his Treasure Island and Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde, and this is the part that made me call this book a bit of a retelling.

Before wrapping up this review I must talk about the romance, because there was a love triangle but it was done is such a different way that I just didn't bother me at all, and that's almost a first! Hooray for diversity, and even more diversity in fantasy books! And as a NA book, do consider yourselves warned, there are sexy times ahead, and there's also great humour, fantastic quotes and a lil bit of magic.

All in all a very recommended book to all the lovers of fantasy that will appreciate something fresh and unique and very well crafted! Very well deserve 4 to 4.5 stars!

This Monday was release day for The Return, the spin-off series for the Covenant series, by Jennifer L Armentrout!!

As soon as it downloaded to my Kindle, I just had to read it, and you guys need to read it! Even if you haven't read the Covenant series, that I highly recommend!, you need to give this one a try! Seth is quite a character, he's both swoony, cocky and a bit annoying (or quite a bit, depending on who you ask!)!

Why am I eagerly awaiting The Return? It is the start of a new spin-off series, the Titan series, that is based around Seth, the other Apollyon of the Covenant series! I am super excited to see what Seth will do now that the story focus is on him!

Mark This Book Monday: Wicked by Jennifer L Armentrout!!

Hey there guys.

The blog has been a little silent this past week, but my brain has been rather wacked since last Tuesday for family reasons. My favourite aunt was fighting cancer for the last few months and over the past week she took a turn for the worst and died on Friday. My days off work were spent grieving and with my family instead of reading and relaxing as I had planned.

But I need to get back to a somewhat regular schedule and getting the blog somewhat back in shape, so for today I have a new Mark This Book Monday review. This one was one of those new releases that I just had to read as soon as I got it!



Wicked by Jennifer L. Armentrout

My rating: 4 of 5 stars


Another page turner from JLA! Steamy, full of awesome banter and a nice twist on Fae mythology!

I got to read the first 8 chapters early as the author were posting them on Wattpad and then as soon as my preorder downloaded at midnight, I started reading it and finished it that very same night!

Ivy is a great character and I loved how she was both kick arse and vulnerable, had some secrets in her past that shaped who she was but kept on trying to move forward and not settle only with the path of the Order.

Ren is one swoony character, he's part nice guy part, cocky bastard in the best of ways. He had his moments of being a lil irritating but never in a really angering way, and he had some really disarming cute moments. He was also extremely alluring and reading the chemistry between him and Ivy was fantastic to read!

Tink was an interesting character, since at first it seems more a comic relief than anything else, but by the end of the book we get the feeling there's more to him than just that, and I'm pretty sure that'll be expanded in the next book too.

I loved the idea of the Order being Fae hunters in secret and I found the idea of Fae myth and the way it was tweaked for the book very intriguing,it's basically the same but with some twists here and there that ended up being at the core of the whole book and the climax! There were some surprising revelations, some that I kinda saw coming, but we're still left with unexplained motivations, which I'm quite eager to learn about in the next book.

This book is NA give the fact that the characters are in college age, and Ivy is actually trying to get through college while being a Fae hunter and also because there are more mature scenes and situations and that includes sex. And boy, Jennifer L Armentrout does know how to write steamy scence!

Very well deserved 4 stars for this one, and once again JLA has managed to start another series I'm gonna be pinning after!

Mark This Book Monday: The Shape of My Heart by Ann Aguirre!!!

Hello guys!

Today is a weird kind of Monday. It is an official holiday here in Spain so people aren't working, except for those like me, so it is a working Monday, but since I've also worked the weekend, it's not a "terrible start of the week" kind of Monday!

I'm starting the week with an ARC edition of Mark This Book Monday! I got approved for this one on NetGalley by Harlequin HQN and I am oh so grateful because they always approve my requests! Since I ended up reading it once my preorder arrived, I've read the finished copy.

I did a buddy read for this one with the lovely Emma of Never Judge a Book by its Cover and it was great having someone to discuss the book while reading and share all the feels! I cannot wait till the Book Club she's organizing starts in Jan!

As an ARC this one will hopefully continue to improve my NG ratio and will count towards my 2014 Review Pile Reading Challenge!

The Shape of My Heart by Ann Aguirre

My rating: 5 of 5 stars


Ann Aguirre really knows how to write NA in a way that keeps me glued to the page, connects with me emotionally and makes me want to beg her to write more books!

I had read and loved the previous two books in the 2B trilogy and for this one I did a buddy read with the lovely Emma from Never Judge a Book by Its Cover, because we both were super excited for this one!

This is the story of Max and Courtney and quite unexpectedly, it is my favourite of the three of them. I connected to these two and their story in such a raw and personal way that I found myself bawling my eyes out more often than not.

Max we met on the first book since he was one of the original tenants of the 2B apartment, but we always saw only the façade he showed to the world, though we got hints at who he really was and what might be behind his bad boy looks and attitude. And boy did I love discovering who he really is! His past in no walk in the park and it's amazing the strenght that the character has.

Courtney is a more recent addition to the 2B apartment but she really got to me. I wasn't 100% sure of her when we met her as Lauren's replacement but being in her head in this book made me love her. She is one tough girl that defies expectations and conventionalisms to always try to be true to who she feels she is, and she's strong and emotional and broken and has flaws and simply is a fantastic character.

The relationship between Courtney and Max started from flatmates, to friends, to best friends to couple and it was done great, so much that it got me super emotional and super invested on their relationship. Not only they have to realize that they have feelings beyond friendship and trust but they have to deal with each other's ghosts, Max's family and Courtney's ex and her family.

There are many tough themes touched upon in this book like alcoholism, death, substance abuse, accidents, disabilities... but always presented in a realistic way and never felt cheap or done for the sake to stir drama. And as tough and realistic as they can get, there's always a current of hope and positivity through this book that makes you feel like even if things are bleak, they can get better. And the characters will fight tooth and claw to make it better.

I highly recommend this series to all of those who love NA or love Ann Aguirre or love contemporaries and to all the rest too because although Ann is now on my auto-buy list, I am not a big fan of NA or contemporaries and I've loved all three of these books! Ver well deserved 4.5 stars for this one!

I have just started these two today after finishing last night with Red Rising by Pierce Brown and loving it! The Shape of My Heart I've started as a buddy read with my friend Emma from Never Judge a Book by Its Cover. I'm a huge fan of Ann Aguirre and I'm only 5 chapters in and she's almost made me bawl twice! I got TSOMH as an ARC and I'm hoping to get my review up for it next week! The Here And Now is another ARC that I got from NG and so far it's a rather fast read, hopefully I'll have the review for it later this week!

Saturday Pages: ARC Review of As Long As You Love Me by Ann Aguirre!!

Hello everyone & happy Saturday!

This week I'm back to having Saturday Pages around and it's all about another ARC review. I got approved for this one via NetGalley and I have to give a big shout out and thank you to Harlequin and all its imprints cause they always approve my requests! Thank you for the vote of confidence!

As an ARC it also counts towards my 2014 Review Pile Reading Challenge and will hopefully help eventually reach the 80% ratio on NG!!

As Long As You Love Me by Ann Aguirre

NA is not exactly a genre I have ever felt very drawn to and as such I haven't really read much of it, but I can safely say now that I love the kind of NA that Ann Aguirre writes!

As Long As You Love Me is the second installment on her 2B trilogy and I really enjoyed this one too, I'm not sure if I can say if I liked this one more than I Want It That Way but I know it hit me in the feels more closely to home than the previous one, and made me cry a whole lot more!

This one is all about Lauren, Nadia's best friend and roommate that decides to give up on university and run back home. We barely got to know Lauren through Nadia's story, and all because Lauren was already steeling herself to leave. The book starts with Lauren returning to Sharon, to live with her mom again and to deal with all the gossip surrounding her return.

By returning to Sharon, Lauren has to face all her bad choices in university, has to face all kinds of gossip and has to return to a home life that was less than ideal when she left. She stumbles onto Nadia's brother, Rob, who was her crush since she can remember having a crush and who has always treated her like a second sister.

They start hanging out as friends at first, even if Lauren is well aware that she's never got over the crush, and little by little they find themselves unable to deny the attraction and the connection between them.

As with IWITW, the main couple is made up of two individuals with their own diffent issues. Lauren has become an expert of hiding who she is and what issues she has and Rob has spent his whole life being relegated to be considered nothing but a hot guy with no brains. They both work as the foundations of self discovery of each other, but they also need to learn to stand on their own feet alone before getting into a healthy relationship. And that's one hell of an important message here, even if it can lead to some momentary heartbreak.

Great characters, realistic and believeable relationships with the focus not only on the main couple, but also family dynamics, friends, ex's, and the sometimes oppresive for some and comforting for others, feeling of a small town.

I connected so much with Lauren and Rob and loved their relationship, how they supported each other and how they made a great team. I loved how Lauren was so supportive of Rob, his hobby and his worth, even to the point of confronting those who are supposedly closer to him. Despite all her issues, Lauren is not someone to stay back and let others push her into a shape that is not her, and she takes charge of her life and makes sure that Rob does too.

I'm still not sure if New Adult is a genre that I will read a lot of, but I know for sure that I will be reading any and all the NA that Ann Aguirre writes and I'm already really looking forward to the third book in this trilogy! Well deserved 4 stars for this one!

Mark This Book Monday: ARC Review of Athena's Ashes by Jamie Grey!!

Hello everyone!

Once again the blog has been a bit silent this weekend but I've been rather busy with preparations and travelling and meeting people and playing guide and... really have barely had any time to blog (or sleep all that either!) So today the blog is back on track and (hopefully) it will continue for the rest of the week!

To start the week right, the first entry for Mark This Book Monday is one of those sequels that don't disappoint and not only you love them, they leave you really looking forward to the next book!

Since I got an ARC of this one from the author in exchange for an honest review, I'm counting this one for my 2014 Review Pile Reading Challenge!

Athena's Ashes by Jamie Grey

I've always been a big fan of science fiction so trilogy by Jamie Grey was appealing since I heard about book one (that I loved) and this one that is book 2 hasn't disappointed me either! Btw, thanks a lot for the ARC Jamie!

After the cliffhanger of book 1, not a horrible one but a cliffhanger nonetheless, I was really looking forward to read this one! It starts pretty much where Star Thief left us, with Renna in the care (and custody) of MYTH, while Finn and the Athena's crew have gone on the run.

This book has all the awesome things of science fiction like the obvious one of ships and stellar traveling and adventures and high stakes and ethical dilemmas about science and progress and humanity.

Renna continues to be a great main character, continually growing and trying to find out what she really wants to do, surprising herself when she finds herself doing things she wouldn't have done some time back and even when there's romance and a love interest, she doesn't really lose the sigh of what must be done, even when her subconscious betrays her in a biiiig way (not telling you want I mean with that, but it surprised me and I had a ball with that!).

I was rather surprised when the villain was revealed, because somehow I was not expecting it to be who it really was, and I won't be saying anymore cause I don't want to spoil it for anyone else! It was quite nice to see how a villain could be hidden in plain sight that way, that's all I'm saying!

There's a lot of action in this book, betrayal, unexpected meetings, a race against time for more than one reason and there's also romance. This is a NA book after all, so expect mature situations, so to speak! Very well done and with a great relationship starting to build up. Tension & difficulties but thankfully no love triangle at all!

There was a great build up to the final confrontation with deception, pain and rising stakes and I couldn't keep turning the pages fast enough, hoping that I was right about something very spoilery (I was!) and then we got a fantastic resolution with an ending that is a cliffhanger again of sorts but not the horrible one that leaves you mad and feeling like throwing the book away, but the kind that makes you go "Oooooooooh!!!" and "gimme more, I want to know what happens next!"

A very very well deserving 4 to 4.5 stars book, I know that whatever Jamie writes next, I want to read it!

First Chapter, First Paragraph is one of the two memes that I will be alternating on Thursdays in place of my Ink & Batter posts during the summer, when I won't be baking due to the heat!

I discovered this meme via the ladies of My Shelf Confessions, and it is hosted on Tuesdays by Bibliophile by the Sea. But since I already have my blog tours posts and Tell Me Tuesdays, I thought that it'd work best on Thursdays for me!

The idea of this meme/feature is quite self-explanatory from its name, we share the first paragraph of the first chapter of our current read! Quite a good teaser for others to read and see if they'd be intrigued!
