Friday Reads: City of Heavenly Fire by Cassandra Clare!!!

Happy Friday everyone! Today's book for the Friday Reads entry is one of those highly awaited books and the final book of a series (I'm reading quite a few series enders this year I feel...) and I'm very happy to report it was NOT a disappointment and actually could be said the book that makes the series worth it!

It is part of my 2014 Book Blogger Summer Reading Program books and I thought I was doing quite well with the challenge, but I've realized I'm like 4 books behind now! Need to catch up soon!

City of Heavenly Fire (The Mortal Instruments, #6)City of Heavenly Fire by Cassandra Clare

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

City of Heavenly Fire is one of those books that simply make a whole series. I had quite liked the first three books, but then City of Fallen Angels and to some degree City of Lost Souls left me feeling a bit so-so. Jace was getting a bit too closed off and whiney and the relationship with Clary was getting a bit odd...

I will try to keep my review completely spoiler free for the book, but I don't think I'll be able to keep it spoiler free for the rest of the series.

But, when I started City of Heavenly Fire I knew that I was not going to be let down with this one at all, even if when I started reading first we got to read about Emma Carstairs but soon enough we see how important hers and Julian's POV will be for the book, and what a great introduction to the next series!

One of my favourite things of this book was how finally all the interactions were based more in communication and being truthful to each other than on missunderstandings. There are secrets and people that you cannot trust and alliances that you wouldn't expect, but not all that much of the "I'll be brooding here and even if it'd be cause for later trouble, I won't tell you about it" that irritated me a bit on previous books.

There are quite a few different POVs in the book and all of them are very much important to offer a complete view of the story. It's not just about Clary and Jace, but also about the rest of the Shadowhunters and the werewolves and the vampires... There's plenty of action, heartfelt moments, plot progression, laughs, quirky moments and moments that made me cry. I also loved how some of the storyline is relevant to The Infernal Devices trilogy, so ties to the prequel as well as the sequel series!

It's hard to talk much about this book without giving anything away unwittingly so I'll be keeping this review short. The ending was great, with some historical references that very wisely will make us think of what's to come, but for now we got a quite satisfactory ending, with plenty of sadness, happiness and a certain bittersweet feel to it! The comic at the end of the book? Amazing and made me cry so VERY MUCH!! *sigh*

Very well deserved 5 stars for this one, and Cassandra Clare has managed to snare me again and I'll be looking forward to read Emma's & Julian's story in Lady Midnight next!

  1. I've fallen so far behind Pili! I've only read through book 4 and that was a long, long time ago, so I pretty much would need to start over at the beginning:) You know what makes me happy though? This:

"One of my favourite things of this book was how finally all the interactions were based more in communication and being truthful to each other than on misunderstandings."

THANK HEAVEN!!!! Nothing drives me crazier than a book full of miscommunications, so I'm glad the characters try for honesty in this sixth installment:) WOO HOO!

    1. Oh Jenny, I so know what you mean! All the inside brooding and suffering in silence and the like? It kills me!!
I was so happy when the interactions were much clearer and straight forward in this one!
      Thank you!! =D

  2. I really enjoyed the first three books! City of Fallen Angels & Lost Souls were both meh for me. Dyan gave this one 2.5 stars so I'm kinda scared. D: Plus it's a HUGE book... Anyway, I'll probably only be reading for Simon & Izzy. <3 So glad you loved this one and that it wrapped up the series nicely for you! :D

    1. Apparently Simon might be getting his own series of short stories too!
      Thank you, Aimee!

  3. Interesting... I'm glad to hear that everyone sort of talks things out and clears the air, because I hate it when a book turns into a series built on mistakes in understanding things. So glad you loved this one! I hope you enjoy the next series as well! Fabulous review, lady :)

  4. You don't know how happy I am to know you loved this book!!! I just got it yesterday and I already read like 200 pages but I have to make myself read slowly because I don't want to say goodbye just yet.
What a great review, Pili! It gives me hope about the ending!

  5. I'm so glad to read your review and see that you enjoyed it. I've been very unsure about this series since the addition of the last 3 books. I was so very content with the end of City of Glass and the follow ups seemed to just disappoint. Still, Ms.Clare's books are hard to resist and the prequel series is one of my favourite series ever. So I will defiantly read this and now that I've read your review, I think I'll go into this one with a more optimistic view :)

    1. I agree that adding more books didn't feel entirely necessary but this last book was great! I hope you'll enjoy it when you read it, Mari!

  6. Okay, I'm not going to read this review yet because I haven't even read COFA yet (I know, I know), but I'm excited to! Particularly because I adoooore Infernal Devices and I hear this book sets up the books about the kids really well. Can't wait for Dark Artifices and...whatever the second spinoff series is called, hah.

    1. The Infernal Devices I LOVED too, even more than I've loved this overall series! And after this one, I'm quite excited for the next series with Emma, that I think is the Dark Artifices... can't keep all the series names straight myself!

  8. I am WAY behind with this series. I know I read the first three books (maybe the fourth?), but it was back when they first came out, so I'm pretty sure a reread is in order before I attempt to catch up . . . which will probably be sooner rather than later b/c with the final installment being 5 stars, I'm pretty sure I won't be happy until I do. Glad you loved it ;)

    1. Oh yeah, this books do need to remember a bit of all that was going on in the previous ones to make some sense of all that's going on! I had my doubts with a few of the books of the series, but this was a fantastic book that totally made the series for me, Jessica! Thank you!
