Hello everyone! Happy Friday!
This week has been a bit a mad, with the hangover from all my baking for the candy bar for my friend's wedding and the wedding and the recovering, and work being crazy... but I'm trying to get this week on track and I finally have a review up on the blog for this week's Friday Reads! Not part of any challenge or anything, so it was a well deserved "me" read!
Ask Again Later by Liz Czukas
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
For a non-fan of contemporaries, I've found myself reading and enjoying quite a few as of late, and Ask Again Later was the perfect answer for the "what to read tonight, I want something quick paced and fun!".
And Ask Again Later completely delivered! I flew through the book and not only it had me smiling a lot, but I was laughing out loud at 3 am! It's fun, it's light, it's fluffy without being ridiculous and isn't filled with unnecessary drama!
Heart has decided to go to prom with her group of friends but her plans change when she gets two unexpected invitations. Both aren't exactly appealing from the romantic front but she feels compromised to accept one of the two invites and not go ahead with her original plans. How can she choose? Tossing a coin! And from then on, heads or tails shows us the two very different proms that Heart goes through with each of her dates, until the moment both narratives converge together again.
Heart is such a wonderful character! She might be a bit clueless and a bit easily pushed into doing something she didn't want, but given her family and her general attitude to try and keep drama free, I could understand how she seemed a bit of a push over when it came to her brother. Her obliviousness was rather endearing and her no dating rule to make sure she wouldn't repeat her mother's mistakes? It might seem very silly, but I did something similar focusing on a celebrity crush to avoid dating for a while, and I was over 20 at the time!
I found both alternative realities very entertaining and I loved seeing the different perspectives and interactions between Heart and her friends and Heart and her brother's crowd. I found the "tails" perspective more adorable and fun, since she spends more time being herself with her friends, but the "heads" perspective is totally hilarious even if I felt like smacking people now and then!
I really wasn't expecting the merge of both alternatives quite as seamlessly as it happened and I loved how much banter and adorableness there was in it!
If you are looking for an entertaining, fun and feel good book, do not hesitate, go grab Ask Again Later! You'll thank me (later if you want!) ;) Well deserved 4 to 4.5 stars!

There are very few negative reviews for this one and I WANT TO READ IT... but I am a little worried about the dual timelines. I always tend to be disappointed by them which is why I am worried this won't work out for me :/
ReplyDeleteI am glad to see you enjoyed this one though, Pili!! :)
Rashika @ The Social Potato
Give it a try, Rashika, I think the dual timelines worked well enough!
DeleteThank you for visiting!
I had no idea this was a book that featured alternate realities! YES! For some reason, I adore books about parallel lives or worlds, so this one is definitely going on my list. Plus, it sounds adorable and I need something cute and fun after some of the heavier reads I've tackled lately! Fantastic review Pili!
ReplyDeleteThis is a lot of fun, Jenny! If you need a light and fun read, this will be exactly the right thing!
DeleteI didn't know much about this book but I've seen the cover everywhere. Now that I've read your review I really want to read it. It sounds amazing!
ReplyDeleteGreat review, Pile!
I hope you do, Lis! It's a lot of fun of a book!
DeleteI loooooved Heart! The name's pretty cute, too! :) I actually didn't expect the two alternatives to merge. I didn't expect the ending, either, but I loved it to bits! So glad you loved this, Pili!
ReplyDeleteYeah, same here! I was quite surprised at how the ending came about!
DeleteThanks Aimee!
Yes, her brother seemed like an ass and I just didn't know why she kept on going along with him. I found this to be a really enjoyable, fluffy read though and loved it!
ReplyDeleteIt was a lot of fun of a book to read! And yeah, I really felt like punching her brother sometimes!
DeleteI don't think I have ever read a book with an alternate reality situation going on. I really like the sound of them both playing out!
ReplyDeleteThis looks so much fun and I was glad that you was entertained by the main character! :)
Thanks for sharing & great review! I am gonna keep my eye out for this one! :)
Alex @ The Shelf Diaries
I hope you'll get to check it out, Alex! It was a lot fun!
DeleteThis is the third glowing review I've seen from a trusted blogger friend! Hmmm... *eyes book* Perhaps I'll read Czukas's Top Ten Clues? Since that one is forthcoming, and on Edelweiss. Sounds like a good compromise to me :o I don't really like contemporaries, but if this is the THIRD trusted blogger friend's review that is super positive, then I should give it a shot! Fantastic review, Pili!
ReplyDeleteAlyssa @ The Eater of Books!
If you can get Top Ten Clues definitely do, I think it sounds rather as quirky and fun as this one was, and you can see if you like this author's voice! ;)
DeleteI'm so happy you loved this one, Pili! I read it and was kinda annoyed so I rated it a 2, but I do agree that their banters and everything were nicely written - humorous without "trying too hard", and just plain brilliant.
ReplyDeleteFaye at The Social Potato
The humour was fantastic to me, and I think that I really needed a "fun" book at the moment, so it was perfect for me!
DeleteSorry to hear it didn't work out for you, though! =/
Aw, I'm glad you enjoyed it! I thought it was a pretty cute book, too. I kind of felt like the one "choice" was a little pointless in the end because it was so clear it was just not gonna happen, but the story kept me interested and I really liked the narrative voice. Like you said, a quick, light read. :)
ReplyDeleteWendy @ The Midnight Garden
Yep, the choice wasn't really relevant in the end, but it provided a very good excuse to explore the characters!
DeletePS--and yes, we need more humor in YA books!
ReplyDeleteAgreed! Sometimes we really need books that will make us laugh!
DeleteAw. Great review Pili :D I'm so happy you mostly loved this book. <3 It do sound sweet. I'm glad you thought it was sweet and fun :D Probably not for me, as I still don't really like this genre :p I need a good fantasy, lol. But maybe one day :)
ReplyDeleteThank you sweetie! I've discovered that although I'm not the biggest fan of contemporaries, there are a few that I really really love! Maybe you need to give a try to some that sound good to you!
