Never was there a tale of more woe than this of Juliet and her Romeo…But true love never dies. Though they’re parted by the veil between the world of mortals and the land of the dead, Romeo believes he can restore Juliet to life, but he’ll have to travel to the underworld with a thoroughly infuriating guide.

Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, may not have inherited his father’s crown, but the murdered king left his son a much more important responsibility—a portal to the Afterjord, where the souls of the dead reside. When the determined Romeo asks for help traversing the treacherous Afterjord, Hamlet sees an opportunity for adventure, and the chance to avenge his father’s death.

In an underworld filled with leviathan monsters, ghoulish shades, fire giants and fierce Valkyrie warriors, Hamlet and Romeo must battle their way through jealousy, despair, and their darkest fears to rescue the fair damsel. Yet finding Juliet is only the beginning, and the Afterjord doesn’t surrender souls without a price…

My Review

When I first saw the summary for this book I was so sold on it. Romeo going to rescue Juliet from the Underworld as another Morpheus in search of Eurydice, and having Hamlet as guide? That was so promising and so not-your-usual romantic plot!

So when I got approved for it on NetGalley I was very pleasantly surprised! Thank you, Entangled Teen!

There is a romantic plot in this book, because what can be more romantic that go into Hell to try and bring back the one you love? It's also quite full of all sorts of mythology to the brim, which simply made me too happy! I'm not sure how to review this cause I don't want to spoil this for anyone and I'm not entirely sure what would or wouldn't be a spoiler... We have Shakespearian characters being quite true to character for the most part, a journey to the Underworld and plenty of mythology references.

Romeo didn't die but Juliet did, so when he wakes up from the poison he decides to try and bring back Juliet from death any way he can, he's told to journey north and he finds Hamlet as the one that can help him on his quest.

I must confess I wasn't sure what to expect of this book, I was hoping it'd be something different but wow did I get it! From the moment they step into the Underworld and encounter frost giants!?! This book was quite a wild ride, with some moments of irritation at the characters, rooting for them massively and not being sure what to expect the rest of the time.

Hamlet, Romeo and Juliet start very much as you'd remember them from their original books (if you've read them, and if not you must have watched some form or other of version of these very well known classics) but I love the character development they have, specially Juliet! Oh I cannot say anything more cause otherwise I'd surely drop big spoilers, but I sure loved seeing her as much more than a girl in love!

For some reason I was expecting this one to be a standalone, but with that ending I know it is the first one of a series for sure. It was not a horrible cliffhanger but it does tell you that there is more to come. And I do plan to read whatever comes next too!

Very well deserved 4 stars for this very atypical twist to the classics with a healthy dose of mythology.
