Vicarious by Paula Stokes: PLAYLIST!!

 Hey there guys!!

This week another of my fave 2016 books that I beta read last year comes out and I cannot wait till I can read the finished copy of Vicarious!! And now I can read it while listening to the songs that inspired it because Paula is here to share them all with us, even with the lil extra bit of commentary & explanation!

So here is the Spotify link for those of you like me that use Spotify ALL THE TIME:

Vicarious by Paula Stokes

And now I give it over to Paula!:

When I create a playlist, I “watch” the book like it’s a movie in my head and select songs that fit individual scenes. I also try to find songs that match the tone of the story. Vicarious is a gritty, high-tech mystery with a lot of action scenes and dark emotions. I think you’ll find that this playlist captures those elements quite well. In case you don’t use Spotify, I have linked to official licensed (AKA non-pirated) YouTube videos where available.) Enjoy!

POWER by Kanye West
Even though Vicarious starts with a prologue and then flips to a scene with both sisters in the penthouse apartment where they live, the movie in my head has always begun with a scene panning in over the city of St. Louis at night. There are gray skyscrapers, and sidewalks crusted over with ice. People cluster in front of the businesses that line the darkened streets--businessmen, club goers, drug dealers. POWER captures both the urban feel and frenetic energy of the area where Winter and Rose live.

Radioactive by Imagine Dragons
I heard this song on YouTube in 2012 when I was writing the first draft of Vicarious (which back then was called Goodbye Rose), and there was something about the feel of the song that just clicked with the manuscript. I probably listened to Radioactive at least two hundred times during the revision process, because something about it always transported me from the real world back into the world of Vicarious.

City Hunter (Instrumental) by Oh Jun Sung from the City Hunter OST soundtrack
If Radioactive is the right music for Winter and Jesse walking across the frozen streets near the beginning of the book, this short instrumental piece is the right accompaniment as they break into the Phantasm building, navigate the darkened offices, and then run away after getting caught. Thanks to Eli from The Silver Words for this pick. This kdrama is not on Hulu, but I must find somewhere because it sounds epic!

My Songs Know What You Did in the Dark (Light ‘Em Up) by Fall Out Boy
This is another song like Radioactive where the music and lyrics together capture the essence of the entire novel. I have always imagined this song being used in my book-movie’s trailer. But since my book-movie is a purely hypothetical thing that exists only in my mind, I’ll pick an actual scene to slot this in. It would be perfect for the high-energy scene where Winter and Gideon are sparring on the rooftop.

Keep Breathing by Ingrid Michaelson
After Rose is killed, Winter struggles with anger, depression, and hopelessness. There’s a point where she’s in the bathroom and she’s supposed to be taking a bath but she can’t even find the energy to do that. She’s just sitting up against the wall, thinking about her sister. This song is perfect for that scene.

(Can’t You) Trip Like I Do by The Crystal Method
Winter tries to push past her depression by focusing on finding out who killed Rose. One of the places the clues lead her to is a hot new dance club called Zoo. This song by fits the ambiance of the club as well as Winter’s mindset during the scene.

Disturbia by Rihanna
After leaving the club, Winter and a couple of friends find themselves in a high-speed car chase during a snow storm. Given the events leading up to the chase, I think Disturbia is the perfect accompaniment to this particular action sequence.

Bad by Infinite
I wanted to include at least one K-pop song on this list because K-pop is so popular with young adult readers. (This book is actually more K-rock or K-metal, but those songs are a lot harder to find on Spotify.) So here we are. This is a song about a guy who loves a girl so much he’s afraid she might ruin him. After the car chase, there are multiple scenes that show how far Jesse will go to protect Winter—maybe too far. Is she going to ruin him? You’ll have to read to find out ;)
Thanks to Minjae for the song recommendation!

Beautiful by Akon, featuring Colby O'Donis, Kardinal Offishall
Later in the book, Winter is playing one of Rose’s ViSE recordings from Inferno, the dance club in the building next door to where she lives. Rose’s clubbing experiences are a lot different from Winter’s, and this song fits the theme of that ViSE perfectly. In fact, I’m pretty sure all of the people in this video are at Inferno with Rose ;)

Falling to Pieces by Faith No More
This sounds like it should be about Winter’s state of mind as she deals with the death of her sister, but the lyrics do a better job of describing Winter’s feelings for Jesse. Gideon sends the two of them to Miami to record a ViSE, and spending the night in a hotel room with Jesse brings all of Winter’s conflicting emotions bubbling to the surface.

Always by Saliva
“I hear a voice say ‘Don’t be so blind.’ It’s telling me all these things that you would probably hide…” Winter has major trust issues when it comes to men. She wants to trust Jesse, but when she finds out a secret that he’s been keeping, she becomes as angry as the lyrics to this song. “I love you, I hate you…”

Terrible Lie by Nine Inch Nails
When Winter finally finds out who killed her sister, she becomes even angrier than she was about the secret Jesse kept from her. An angry girl doing angry girl things needs some angry NIN music to go along with.

Two Against One by Danger Mouse and Daniele Luppi, featuring Jack White
After Winter gets angry, she calms down and has to face some harsh realities. But is she strong enough to accept the truth? Or will she fall apart without her sister there to hold her together? This song is perfect for when she’s piecing together the entire puzzle in her brain.

Chop Suey by System of a Down
Chop Suey is a close second to Radioactive when it comes to transporting me into the world of Vicarious. (I know, I know—the songs could not be more different.) This song is fifteen years old, but it still feels very cutting edge to me, with its mix of thrash metal guitar riffs and lead vocals that transition into a softer bridges and choruses. There’s a part near the end of the book where Winter is desperately sprinting up the stairs, that fits exactly with a part near the end of this song.

Vicarious by Tool
The last song in a playlist is always the one I imagine playing while the credits of my “book movie” are running. This song is not only the obvious choice, but both the lyrics and music do a great job describing Winter’s frame of mind as she transitions from the end of Vicarious to the beginning of the sequel. The band Tool does not believe their albums should be experienced piecemeal, so this song is not available on Spotify. (Pili here - I ended up adding a tribute band version to at least let you listen to the lyrics and the music as close as possible).

You'll Want To Read This Book Wednesday: A Study In Scarlet Women by Sherry Thomas!!

You'll Want To Read This Book Wednesday was inspired by Save the Date from The Perpetual Page Turner and Pre-Squee from Bewitched Bookworms, when I decided to do my own feature/meme to showcase those books that I get to read pretty ahead of time (mainly from BEA) and it'd replace Waiting on Wednesday on my blog. It might be weekly, bi-weekly or once a month, depending on when I indulge on reading one of the far off ARCs!

Today I'm featuring an eARC that I got approved for by Berkley on NetGalley and I just had to devour right away! A Study In Scarlet Women by Sherry Thomas!!

A Study In Scarlet Women by Sherry Thomas

USA Today bestselling author Sherry Thomas turns the story of the renowned Sherlock Holmes upside down…

With her inquisitive mind, Charlotte Holmes has never felt comfortable with the demureness expected of the fairer sex in upper class society.  But even she never thought that she would become a social pariah, an outcast fending for herself on the mean streets of London.

When the city is struck by a trio of unexpected deaths and suspicion falls on her sister and her father, Charlotte is desperate to find the true culprits and clear the family name. She’ll have help from friends new and old—a kind-hearted widow, a police inspector, and a man who has long loved her. But in the end, it will be up to Charlotte, under the assumed name Sherlock Holmes, to challenge society’s expectations and match wits against an unseen mastermind.

It's no secret that Paula is one of my fave authors, and one of the many things that I love about her is how capable she is to write very different books very well! She can write fluffy contemporaries with relevant themes (Girl Against The Universe) and she can write murder mysteries that keep you guessing (Liars INC), and now Vicarious, that is a genre defying book! It's a thriller, a mystery, science fiction and it's got quite a few tough themes that are important to be brought to attention.

Vicarious is one of those books that have you saying "just one more chapter" because you just cannot stop reading! It'll keep you guessing, will make you feel the tension and the uncertainty and also has a few lighter moments to keep the balance. There's a swoony possible love interest, an adorable cat, family relationships and a twist that you WON'T see coming!! As soon as I read it I had to text Paula all my "WTF?!? HOW DID YOU!?! THAT WAS BRILLIANT!?!" and yes, all caps are required!!

You have been warned! You need this book like NOW, and you'll need someone to talk about spoilers once you read it!! So go preorder Vicarious so you can start reading it ASAP!!

You'll Want To Read This Book Wednesday: Ghostly Echoes by William Ritter

You'll Want To Read This Book Wednesday was inspired by Save the Date from The Perpetual Page Turner and Pre-Squee from Bewitched Bookworms, when I decided to do my own feature/meme to showcase those books that I get to read pretty ahead of time (mainly from BEA) and it'd replace Waiting on Wednesday on my blog. It might be weekly, bi-weekly or once a month, depending on when I indulge on reading one of the far off ARCs!

This week I'm showcasing another of my BEA ARCs that I just finished reading last week and that I absolutely loved!

Ghostly Echoes by William Ritter

Jenny Cavanaugh, the ghostly lady of 926 Augur Lane, has enlisted the investigative services of her fellow residents to solve a decade-old murder—her own. Abigail Rook and her eccentric employer, Detective R. F. Jackaby, dive into the cold case, starting with a search for Jenny’s fiancĂ©, who went missing the night she died. But when a new, gruesome murder closely mirrors the events of ten years prior, Abigail and Jackaby realize that Jenny’s case isn’t so cold after all, and her killer may be far more dangerous than they suspected.

Fantasy and folklore mix with mad science as Abigail’s race to unravel the mystery leads her across the cold cobblestones of nineteenth-century New England, down to the mythical underworld, and deep into her colleagues’ grim histories to battle the most deadly foe she has ever faced.

I really enjoyed Jackaby, the first book in the series, loved Beastly Bones and now Ghostly Echoes, I think I loved even more! Jenny has a bigger role in this book and she comes more into her own, so I cannot help and be more in love with the series since I really loved Jenny and wanted to know more about her since book 1!

Everything gets bigger and bigger in this one, so to speak. The plot thickens are so much more is revealed, more events get connected and the bad guys aren't exactly who you'd expect. More reveals happen about Jenny and her past and even about Jackaby and his Sight too! The world building continues to expand and there are so many ways in which mythologies are mixed together and explained together.

If you haven't started this series I encourage you to do so, it's a mix of detective stories with the wondrous and the unknown and with plenty of mythology thrown in, it's just a fantastic molten pot mix that really works!

I cannot wait to see what the author has in store for us in the next book, so start reading Jackaby and Beastly Bones now and get preordering Ghostly Echoes NOW!

Friday Reads: The Case of The Blue Violet by Robin Stevens!!

Hello there guys!

Today I have only a lil novella up for review because I couldn't get myself to write a review for I'll Give You The Sun that I finished at 3 am... hopefully I'll have it up tomorrow!

But I found out about this delightful novella on my favourite Middle Grade series, The Wells& Wong Mystery Series, and I read it and loved it, so it is my Friday Reads!

The Case of the Blue Violet: A Murder Most Unladylike Mini MysteryThe Case of the Blue Violet: A Murder Most Unladylike Mini Mystery by Robin  Stevens

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Another delightful story from Robin Stevens and the Deepdean girls! Of course I wish it would have been longer, but I wouldn't mind having a lil story like this one once a month in the wait in between the full length books!

This one was written by Daisy instead of Hazel as usual, and our Daisy might be frightfully clever, but she doesn't have the same eye for describing setting or characters as Hazel does! ;) It was a rather cute and short case and I cannot believe after all the whodunit books I've read, I'm still so little observant! I guessed the case quite later than the Detectives, as soon as a certain telegram was received, but still... too late! *shakes head*

Very excited also about the small sampler for the next Wells & Wong Agency case! Next month! Soon, but not soon enough!

Mark This Book Monday: Lockwood & Company by Jonathan Stroud!!

Hello everyone!

I'm starting this week with a double feature for Mark This Book Monday, both books part of the same series, a book and a novella, one from my TBR pile and a novella I got approved for via NetGalley.

I had loved The Amulet of Samarkand series by Jonathan Stroud, so I was quite excited to finally start reading his new series, all about ghosts and spectres!

The Screaming Staircase (Lockwood & Co, #1)The Screaming Staircase by Jonathan Stroud

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

When I got approved for the sequel novella it finally pushed me to read this one, that had been on my TBR pile for a while.

I loved the setting and the world building in this book, starting with a middle point of sorts, because we get Lucy telling us about how her first cases with Lockwood & Co were a bit disastrous, and then she tells us about her life before she came to London and of her first day & interview at Lockwood & Co, which was a bit odd, but that provided ample occasion for us getting some knowledge of the world we're in, one where the dead are ever present and only the kids can see and fight them.

I felt it was oh so very typically English to call the overwhelming invasion of the spirits of the dead simply "the Problem", which to me sounds like you're talking about a creaking step on a staircase, and not something that can kill you and that changed the way society lived, with curfews and a different kind of child labor, so to speak.

We see Lucy meeting Lockwood and George, start working with them and getting the feeling that they're still getting the hang of working together, improvising and getting into as much trouble as they solve. And they stumble into a ghost, a murder mystery and the most haunted house of all of Britain.

I loved how there were hints all over the story and how everyone of the members of Lockwood & Co were important and had information the others didn't in solving the case(s), even if they learnt a tough lesson on team work and learning to trust each other.

This one was a fantastic and intriguing first book on a series that I want to continue reading and enjoying! Well deserved 4 stars to this one!

The Dagger in the Desk (Lockwood & Co., #1.5)The Dagger in the Desk by Jonathan Stroud

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I was approved on NetGalley for this one and it made me push the first book up on my TBR pile so I could read this bridge novella between book 1 and 2.

I really enjoyed this novella, even if it felt a bit short, mostly because I was enjoying it so much that I didn't want it to end so soon! The Dagger in the Desk starts right after book 1 and we see Luce, Lockwood and George recovering from their biggest case to date, enjoying the free publicity that came with it and enjoying having loads of cases thrust upon them.

Luce, Lockwood and George have learnt to trust each other and work together as a team properly, they have a friendly banter and tease each other, but they rely on each other's insticts and abilities.

This one was short and fun but I feel that it quite a few hints here and there for what's to come in the next book, with a certain artifact and how Lucy's abilities seem to be expanding. The case was interesting and fun and that was the reason it felt so short! We also get a glossary about ghosts and spectres at the end of the novella and they were illustrated, perfectly creepy and amazing!

Well deserved 3.5 stars to this novella!

Mark This Book Monday: The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater!

Another book that quite surprised me and totally blew away my expectations in a good way for the next Mark This Book Monday entry.

The Raven Boys (Raven Cycle, #1)The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Sometimes, upon reading the synopsis of a book you make up your mind on what you think it'd typically happen, and despite by best efforts to not do that, it had happen with The Raven Boys... I was expecting insta-love and maybe some typical cliches on rich school boys with a paranormal touch and I am so happy to say that Raven Boys was nothing like I was expecting and in the best ways possible.

Blue Sargent is the only one in her house that is not a clairvoyant or has any sort of physic powers, unlike her mother and her friends, but every year for St Mark's Day she has sat with her mother in a remote abandoned church to watch for the sould of those that would die during the year and she's never seen them. But this year, she doesn't go with her mother, she goes with Neeve, her mother's cousin/half-sister/relativ and she sees a boy, a boy named Gansey and she's told that he's either her true love or she's gonna kill him. Pair that with how she's always been told that if she kisses her true love she'll kill him, and Blue is sure that she wants to avoid love but intrigued enough to want to find more about that boy.

As it happens, Gansey attends a very exclusive school on Blue's town, the Aglionby Academy for boys, known as The Raven Boys. They meet by chance (or maybe fate) at the diner where Blue works and though they don't hit it up or fall in love, everything is set in motion from then on. Having a reading at Blue's house by her mum and friends for Gansey and the rest of his small group of unlikely friends is just the final push for the rock to roll.

This book is carried in the shoulders of its characters and they are such a complex mix that is a joy to read about them and try to discover more about each of them.

The fours boys, Gansey, Adam, Ronan and Noah are such an unlikely mix and so different from the very cliched stereotypes of the rich privileged boys that would attend an elite school, and their interactions and their relationship is one that makes you think of the "your friends are the family you choose" saying.

Blue and her family are such a ragtag of quirky and different personalities and as full of secrets as the boys. Whatever you see in the surface for them, is quite like an iceberg, there's even more unseen.

The plot moves at a slow but steady pace, building up on the mystery and the search of Gansey's own grial quest: finding the tomb of an old Welsh king. It is unclear if Gansey is sure of what he'll do when he finds it, cause even if it's said that you can ask a boon from the king if you find him, it seems that is the search what Gansey is using to find who he is separate from his family and his money, a quest to define himself. All the boys seem to be more or less involved on Gansey's search, some more out of loyalty, some cause they do want something out of the king. And Blue, Blue just can't help being drawn into the quest because she becomes part of the Raven Boys, she finds a different purpose and she just feels she needs to be there.

There's plenty of paranormal elements, but quite in a different and unique way, and it has plenty of gritty tough real world happenings to balance it, there's enough darkness and intrigue to keep you turning the pages and while the ending is quite final, it also leaves plenty of open doors and questions unanswered to be quite eagerly awaiting the next book in the series!

Raven Boys does deserve 4 and a half stars.

Mark This Book Monday: Pretty Little Liars Series!

Another Monday is rolling in, and what a better way to start a new week than with an entertaining series of books to read! Mark This Book Monday today is all about the Pretty Little Liars!

I actually heard about the TV show based in the books before the books themselves, and I started watching the Pretty Little Liars ABC show before I got to reading the books, but since I'm a very impatient person, and all the mystery about A in the show was driving me bonkers, I decided I needed to catch up with the books.

There are 10 books in the series, only 8 of them are out right now, with 2 coming soon(ish):

- Pretty Little Liars

- Flawless

- Perfect

- Unbelievable

- Wicked

- Killer

- Heartless

- Wanted

- Twisted (coming out this July!)

- Ruthless (just checked amazon.uk and this one should come out this December!)

I'm pretty sure you have heard about them, if not the books, the show. Four pretty girls from this perfect town called Rosewood, share a secret (or a few) and their common best friend disappeared, is then found dead, so there's a murder. They start receiving messages from a mysterious A, threatening to reveal their secrets, only known by their dead friend Allison.

If you can get past all the brand naming here and there (or if you particularly enjoy that, good for you), they're very fast and very entertaining books, with twists and tricks, and false clues leading you in the wrong direction, like any good murder mystery book. Upon finishing the one I thought was the last book, Wanted, all the mysteries seem to be solved, but there is a little something left there... and I guess that where the next two books will be picking up from.

I'm intrigued to see how Sara Shepard is gonna move the series from the ending point of Wanted forward, and I also need to watch on the show, I have the last two episodes to watch, before the premiere of the second season!

Quite entertaining to watch & read, but also makes me grateful my High School years were nothing like that, too much stress & drama, oh my! ;)
