Mark This Book Monday: Lockwood & Company by Jonathan Stroud!!

Hello everyone!

I'm starting this week with a double feature for Mark This Book Monday, both books part of the same series, a book and a novella, one from my TBR pile and a novella I got approved for via NetGalley.

I had loved The Amulet of Samarkand series by Jonathan Stroud, so I was quite excited to finally start reading his new series, all about ghosts and spectres!

The Screaming Staircase (Lockwood & Co, #1)The Screaming Staircase by Jonathan Stroud

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

When I got approved for the sequel novella it finally pushed me to read this one, that had been on my TBR pile for a while.

I loved the setting and the world building in this book, starting with a middle point of sorts, because we get Lucy telling us about how her first cases with Lockwood & Co were a bit disastrous, and then she tells us about her life before she came to London and of her first day & interview at Lockwood & Co, which was a bit odd, but that provided ample occasion for us getting some knowledge of the world we're in, one where the dead are ever present and only the kids can see and fight them.

I felt it was oh so very typically English to call the overwhelming invasion of the spirits of the dead simply "the Problem", which to me sounds like you're talking about a creaking step on a staircase, and not something that can kill you and that changed the way society lived, with curfews and a different kind of child labor, so to speak.

We see Lucy meeting Lockwood and George, start working with them and getting the feeling that they're still getting the hang of working together, improvising and getting into as much trouble as they solve. And they stumble into a ghost, a murder mystery and the most haunted house of all of Britain.

I loved how there were hints all over the story and how everyone of the members of Lockwood & Co were important and had information the others didn't in solving the case(s), even if they learnt a tough lesson on team work and learning to trust each other.

This one was a fantastic and intriguing first book on a series that I want to continue reading and enjoying! Well deserved 4 stars to this one!

The Dagger in the Desk (Lockwood & Co., #1.5)The Dagger in the Desk by Jonathan Stroud

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I was approved on NetGalley for this one and it made me push the first book up on my TBR pile so I could read this bridge novella between book 1 and 2.

I really enjoyed this novella, even if it felt a bit short, mostly because I was enjoying it so much that I didn't want it to end so soon! The Dagger in the Desk starts right after book 1 and we see Luce, Lockwood and George recovering from their biggest case to date, enjoying the free publicity that came with it and enjoying having loads of cases thrust upon them.

Luce, Lockwood and George have learnt to trust each other and work together as a team properly, they have a friendly banter and tease each other, but they rely on each other's insticts and abilities.

This one was short and fun but I feel that it quite a few hints here and there for what's to come in the next book, with a certain artifact and how Lucy's abilities seem to be expanding. The case was interesting and fun and that was the reason it felt so short! We also get a glossary about ghosts and spectres at the end of the novella and they were illustrated, perfectly creepy and amazing!

Well deserved 3.5 stars to this novella!

Waiting On Wednesday #68!!

Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly feature hosted at Breaking The Spine  that spotlights those can't-wait-to-get-my-hands-on-them books that we are eagerly awaiting!

This week the book I'm really pumped about is Symbiont by Mira Grant!

Goodreads Summary:

"THE SECOND BOOK IN MIRA GRANT'S TERRIFYING PARASITOLOGY SERIES.

THE ENEMY IS INSIDE US.

The SymboGen designed tapeworms were created to relieve humanity of disease and sickness. But the implants in the majority of the world's population began attacking their hosts turning them into a ravenous horde.

Now those who do not appear to be afflicted are being gathered for quarantine as panic spreads, but Sal and her companions must discover how the tapeworms are taking over their hosts, what their eventual goal is, and how they can be stopped."

Why am I eagerly awaiting Symbiont Well, last year I read an ARC of Parasite and absolutely loved it! It was full of science and twisty and surprising and was an amazing book, so I cannot wait to see what's happening next!

What are you all (im)patiently awaiting this week?

Friday Reads: Insomnia by J.R. Johansson!!

Hello everyone! Welcome to yet again another edition of Friday Reads! This week's first entry is another recommendation by the quite awesome Alyssa from The Eater of Books, and one that had been on my TBR list for quite a while, and as such is part of my 2014 TBR Pile Challenge!

Insomnia (The Night Walkers, #1)Insomnia by J.R. Johansson

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This was a very interesting read! I had it in my TBR list for a while, and when I got approved for the sequel in NetGalley I knew it was the right quick to get to reading it already!

Insomnia is the story of Parker, a teenager that cannot sleep, he doesn't have his own dreams, he ends up inhabiting the dreams of whomever he made eye contact last. No sleep is taking a horrible physical toll on him, and a mental one too, since he hasn't told anyone around him for fear of being thought insane and sent to a padded room. It all changes when he meets a girl with different dreams, the kind of dreams that allow him to sleep for the first time in forever. But instead of things getting better for him, it all starts going downhill from there.

This book was fantastic at building the suspense and to make me feel all the creepy-ness in it! I could really feel for Parker and how he suffers, how torn he is about all his choices. His descent into certain degree on madness and obsession is written so well that you feel like you're going downwards with him!

The other characters were also great, I loved Finn as main sidekick/best friend/comic relief, he never felt like an add-on but always had a voice that served as a contrast of normalcy with Parker's increasing otherness. Mia was a great character, even if at first we aren't sure how important she'll really be. Addie is a bit of an odd one here, she's Finn's sister and Parker seems to have a crush on her, but we never really get to know her too much or feel for her much until the very end.

The mystery and the twists in the book were fantastic, but the one thing that annoyed me and that actually costed this book one star was the lack of answers we get. We only know what Parker has somewhat figured out about his "curse" or "ability" and although we suspect something bigger is at stake and we're even teased at and hinted at more answers coming we are not given any in this book, and that really irked me!

This was a very engaging book that kept absorbed and intrigued, turning page after page, and I give it well deserved 4 stars. I'm only annoyed at the lack of answers by the end of the book about the bigger picture! Hopefully I'll get some of them in the sequel!

Waiting On Wednesday #6!!

Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly feature hosted at Breaking The Spine  that spotlights those can't-wait-to-get-my-hands-on-them books that we are eagerly awaiting!

This week my eargerly awaited can't-wait-to-get-my-hands-on-it release is Antigoddess by Kendare Blake!

Goodreads summary:

"The acclaimed author of ANNA DRESSED IN BLOOD returns with an incredible story about ancient gods, modern love and an epic fight for survival

He was Apollo, the sun, and he'd burn down anything that tried to hurt her... Cassandra and Aidan are just your average high-school couple. Or so Cassandra believes. Blissfully unaware that she was once a powerful prophetess, Cassandra doesn't even know that god exist... Until now.

Because the gods are dying - and Cassandra could hold the answer to their survival. But Aidan has a secret of his own. He is really Apollo, god of the sun, and he will do anything to protect the girl he loves from the danger that's coming for her. Even if it means war against his immortal family...
Sexy, irresistible characters; romantic and mythological intrigue; relentless action and suspense - ANTIGODDESS is the YA novel you've been waiting for."

Why am I eagerly awaiting Antigoddess? Well, since the moment I heard Kendare Blake had a new book coming out I knew I had to check it out (I loved her Anna books!) and when I read the summary with the different twist to the Greek mythology and Athena as one of the main characters... I just needed the book!

What are you all (im)patiently waiting to read?

Mark This Book(s) Monday: Vessel by Sarah Beth Durst, The Midnight Spell by Rhiannon Frater and Kody Boye and Nightmare Affair by Mindee Arnett!! !!

Hiya everyone!

Happy Monday (may it be Easter Monday or whatever else it might be to you)!

This week I have no new recipe of cupcake to share with you, and this time is not for lack of time, but for lack of inspiration. I've had a few days off, but I've barely done anything productive, unless practicing saree draping while listening to Iron Maiden or Pearl Jam counts!

So today, we're having a Mark These Books Monday! Instead of just one book, I'm gonna recommend you three different books!

So let's start!

Vessel by Sarah Beth Durst

Well, I was expecting good things from this book, cause the only other book of Sara Beth Durst that I read, Drink, Slay, Love, I loved, and this one didn't disappoint at all!

What a gem of a book! The world building here is fantastic! From the legends of the lands to the gritty sand storms to the sand worms and the Gods... everything is so well weaved, you just feel like you are there!

Liyana is a wonderful character, and I was rooting for her from beginning till the end of her journey! I loved her practical side, how she faced all adversities focusing on the task on hand, one day at a time, and one hour at a time when things threaten to overwhelm her.

An absolute must read for anyone looking for a great YA fantasy or just for any fantasy lovers out there!

The Midnight Spell by Rhiannon Frater & Kody Boye

No photo available cause I read this one on my phone's Kindle app, and I don't know how to take a screen cap on my phone!

I so thoroughly enjoyed and loved this book!

This is not your usual YA book, there are bits of horror and the romance is not really what you'd be mostly used to see, but whatever makes it different, also makes it great!

The characters feel as real teenagers, despite the paranormal bits, from the "outcast" witch that it's still growing into her powers (can you imagine dealing with all the crap that being a teenager is AND worrying about whether if you'll finally come into your witchy powers or remain a fraud-ish?) to her gay best friend, that has to deal with not being popular and being gay in a town full of straight and mostly not-gay-friendly people. Changelings, vampire hunters and loads of geeky references to Buffy!

The story weaves from the personal to the paranormal, from dealing with first loves and relationships to saving the world. And it's done in such a great way you just can't help to keep on turning the pages!

I so hope we'll get a second book for Christy, Adam and the gang!

The Nightmare Affair by Mindee Arnett

This book was so much fun! Full of magic and teenagers, but taking a look at magic in a different way, and exploring magic beings that don't usually appear so much in books.

A magic school is nothing new, neither is a magic sleuth, not even a teenager one, or mundane mixed with the whole story, but this book does it in a very refreshing way, and despite our dear Dusty being a headstrong and slightly oblivious to common sense kinda main character, you just have to like her.

There's also a look at much bigger issues that the high school ones in the shape of the magic world politics, and in way that it mirrors our world, an issue of what we are allowed to use our powers for, and why should we not use them for the wrong reasons.

All in all, a very refreshing read, and I'm really looking forward to book 2: The Nightmare Dilemma.

That's all on books for this week! Next Monday more books for sure, and maybe some cupcakes too!
