You'll Want To Read This Book Wednesday: Ghostly Echoes by William Ritter

You'll Want To Read This Book Wednesday was inspired by Save the Date from The Perpetual Page Turner and Pre-Squee from Bewitched Bookworms, when I decided to do my own feature/meme to showcase those books that I get to read pretty ahead of time (mainly from BEA) and it'd replace Waiting on Wednesday on my blog. It might be weekly, bi-weekly or once a month, depending on when I indulge on reading one of the far off ARCs!

This week I'm showcasing another of my BEA ARCs that I just finished reading last week and that I absolutely loved!

Ghostly Echoes by William Ritter

Jenny Cavanaugh, the ghostly lady of 926 Augur Lane, has enlisted the investigative services of her fellow residents to solve a decade-old murder—her own. Abigail Rook and her eccentric employer, Detective R. F. Jackaby, dive into the cold case, starting with a search for Jenny’s fiancĂ©, who went missing the night she died. But when a new, gruesome murder closely mirrors the events of ten years prior, Abigail and Jackaby realize that Jenny’s case isn’t so cold after all, and her killer may be far more dangerous than they suspected.

Fantasy and folklore mix with mad science as Abigail’s race to unravel the mystery leads her across the cold cobblestones of nineteenth-century New England, down to the mythical underworld, and deep into her colleagues’ grim histories to battle the most deadly foe she has ever faced.

I really enjoyed Jackaby, the first book in the series, loved Beastly Bones and now Ghostly Echoes, I think I loved even more! Jenny has a bigger role in this book and she comes more into her own, so I cannot help and be more in love with the series since I really loved Jenny and wanted to know more about her since book 1!

Everything gets bigger and bigger in this one, so to speak. The plot thickens are so much more is revealed, more events get connected and the bad guys aren't exactly who you'd expect. More reveals happen about Jenny and her past and even about Jackaby and his Sight too! The world building continues to expand and there are so many ways in which mythologies are mixed together and explained together.

If you haven't started this series I encourage you to do so, it's a mix of detective stories with the wondrous and the unknown and with plenty of mythology thrown in, it's just a fantastic molten pot mix that really works!

I cannot wait to see what the author has in store for us in the next book, so start reading Jackaby and Beastly Bones now and get preordering Ghostly Echoes NOW!

Cover Reveal: The Rise of The Genesis by M.R. Merrick!!

Announcing a new book by M.R. Merrick!

In a world where being Supernatural means you’re in danger, Ash Lawson is front and center. After years of helping others escape ATOM—a government entity known for abusing Supernaturals—he’s captured, and saving himself will prove to be the most difficult task he’s undertaken.

Tryst Rivera is a Succubus and veteran at the Academy, a facility tasked with converting underage Supernaturals into cooperative ATOM soldiers. She’s endured her time mostly unscathed, but when Ash arrives and their lives are tethered to one another, she’s placed in immediate danger.

With escape at the forefront of his mind, Ash struggles with the idea of life under ATOM’s thumb. He’ll die before he converts, but his life isn’t the only one he’s responsible for, and he already has more blood on his hands than he can bear. When a chance for freedom arises, Ash needs to decide how much—and who—he’s willing to risk for a second chance.

Saturday Pages: ARC Review of Shutter by Courtney Alameda!!!

Hello everyone!

For this week's Saturday Pages I have a book that I devoured in one night and stayed up till I finished it (it's a good thing I usually don't work morning shift!) and that I am very thankful to Faye from The Social Potato for insisting that I HAD to read it!!

This is the first book that will count for my 2015 Debut Author Challenge and as an ARC (thank you Mcmillan Children's!!) it counts towards one of my categories in the 105 Challenge!!

ShutterShutter by Courtney Alameda

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

My first reaction on seeing this book's cover was to shudder and ignore it because it looked like a scary book, and I'm a total wuss!

But then I read the review that my friend Faye wrote at Xpresso Reads and boy, I got so damned excited about the book!! Then I read another equally good review for it from Maja and I knew I HAD to read this book! So once I saw it on NetGalley, I requested it, crossed my fingers and did a happy dance when I got approved!

I dived straight into it without refreshing myself on the summary, so when all the last names and the connections with the old families I was even more excited about the book's story!

Micheline is our main character and she's a hunter of paranormal entities, a Helsing and a tetrachromat, and her weapon of choice is an analog DSLR camera with special lenses to capture ghosts. Micheline was a fantastic character, she was strong and stubborn, with a lot of loss in her past that has changed who she is from who she was, but she still fights, she still cares for her friends and she goes head first into danger!

The book starts right into the action, and we're learning about everything as we go, so it's a wild ride indeed! The pace was great, no time to be bored at all, because when we aren't following Micheline and her team fighting ghosts, we're dealing with the aftermath and getting extra information and world building. I loved the dynamics in the team, Micheline and her boys: Oliver, Jude and Ryder. I love how the main 4 have a strong team feel and there are no love triangles, thank goodness!

There IS romance in this one but it's the not overwhelming, slow burn sort of romance, the one where they're friends first, have been team mates, supported each other through the tough times, and ready to jumpt to hell if need be! I shipped these two since the first hint at something else about them and I cannot wait to see the progression of them in the next book!

The plot of this one was very well done since I was kept wondering for a good half of the book, even if I had guessed (right) who the main villain was before Micheline did, which only irked me a bit, because I was too busy turning pages and waiting to see what will happen next! I was glued to the pages and finished it in one sitting!

I highly recommend this one, it's urban fantasy with a strong paranormal/supernatural element, with action that will keep you reading while biting your nails! Very well deserved 4 to 4.5 stars! I cannot wait for the sequel!!

Mark This Book Monday: Harper Connelly series!

Hi there! How's this new Monday going? I had to work morning shift, but even if I don't like the getting up early, it means I have the whole evening off!

For this Mark This Book Monday I wanna share another book series by Charlaine Harris, the Harper Connelly Mysteries! It's a 4 book series:

- Grave Sight
- Grave Surprise
- An Ice Cold Grave
- Grave Secret

The main character of this series is Harper Connelly, a young woman of 24 that was hit by lightning at 15, and since that day can feel where a dead body is, and once found can see from the dead's perspective what happened to them in the hours leading to their death and how they died. But since it's seen from the perspective of the dead person, you won't see who killed them in the case of a murder, unless the victim knew their murdered or saw them. Harper travels with her step-brother Tolliver, who is not a blood relative, since Harper's mom married Tolliver's dad when they were in their early teens. Their family life was very complicated since their parents were addicts so the kids had to take care of each other and of the two girls born from that marriage.

The books follow the adventures and travels of Harper & Tolliver around the US, since they are hired as consultants to find dead people and what happened to them, Harper being the one that finds them via some sort of buzzing she feels, and Tolliver as his "manager", helper, bodyguard and general helper. We follow their relationship, and also how Harper hopes to eventually find out what happened to Cameron, her sister that disappeared at 18, when she was coming back from HS.

The full story unfolds along the 4 books, and comes full circle and closes down on the last book, Grave Secret. Very quick reads, with bits of supernatural and more bits of mystery. Very recommended!
