First Chapter, First Paragraph is one of the two memes that I will be alternating on Thursdays in place of my Ink & Batter posts during the summer, when I won't be baking due to the heat!
I discovered this meme via the ladies of My Shelf Confessions, and it is hosted on Tuesdays by Bibliophile by the Sea. But since I already have my blog tours posts and Tell Me Tuesdays, I thought that it'd work best on Thursdays for me!
The idea of this meme/feature is quite self-explanatory from its name, we share the first paragraph of the first chapter of our current read! Quite a good teaser for others to read and see if they'd be intrigued!
Also, be aware, this can contain quotes that might unwittingly spoil something for you for previous books of a series if you're currently midread or something, since this week's book is the third in a series!
Shimmer by Paula Weston.
"'What did I tell you about scratching that?'
I look up, my fingers still digging into the scar above my collarbone. I didn't hear Rafa come out of the bungalow.
'It's itchy'.
'It's itchy because it's healing'. He sits next to me on the top step of the deck. 'Let me see'.
I stretch the neckline of my t-shirt so he can see the puncture marks: a sharkbite-shaped souvenir of my hellion cage match on Monday night. I keep my eyes on the sea beyond the town as he studies it. The sun slips behind a cloud, casting the water in grey shadow. I listen to the low pounding of the surf down the hill, the chatter or lorikeets in the trees up the street. Breathe in morning air sharp with salt and eucalypt."
What do you think? Would you want to know more?
What are you reading right now?
Is this the first book or the third? I really need to read this series, I've heard nothing but amazing things about it and I absolutely HAVE to meet Rafa. I'm ready to add him to the book boyfriend list! *runs to Amazon to buy book 1*
ReplyDeleteShimmer is the third! I HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend this series, Jenny! I'm usually not one for Angels & Demons series and this series has joined the Sweet Evil trilogy and Penryn & The End of Days series in my very limited club of angel books I ADORE!!
DeleteAlso, Jenny, only book 1 is available on the US right now, with the second coming out soon, but if you can (via TBD maybe) book 3 is out now in UK and AUS... there's a MASSIVE cliffy between book 2 and 3!!
Ohh. I do love that teaser :D Thank you for sharing. <3 Sounds awesome. But ack. Yeah. I don't think I'm ready for these books. Sounds like too much heartbreak for me. Maybe one day, though :D As you and others have loved these books so much. <3 Anyway. Amazing post sweetie :) Thank you for sharing. <3
ReplyDeleteMaybe just wait till next year, when the last book comes out, sweetie! I can recommend this series a lot, and despite the heartbreak it's a fantastic series (even better to read all books back to back!).
DeleteIt would appear that the protagonist and I have at least a few things in common, namely scratching bobos. LOL Great snippet!
ReplyDeleteI think you'd like this series Carmel!
DeleteAnd I also have a tendecy to pick at my scabs, I can never let them be!
As you know I'm reading HAZE so yes! I would love to know more :-) I am so glad you loved this series too Pili :-)
ReplyDeleteI hope you are loving Haze, Kristen! I decided to do the first chapter and not the prologue on the book, to try and avoid spoilers for everyone, luckily the first paragraph of the first chapter was rather spoiler free for everyone!
DeleteI haven't read this series yet, but I've always wanted to, especially since Melanie @ YA Midnight Reads loves it so much. I do remember getting declined of the first book when it came out on NG, so that dampened my enthusiasm a bit, but good gods, I really just want to read this now!
ReplyDeleteFaye at The Social Potato
I cannot recommend this series enough, Faye!! If you can get the UK/AUS editions do so, cause in the US only book 1 is available so far! My reviews for all the books will be up in the blog next week, I think!
DeleteHmmm, I've never heard of this series. Interesting excerpt - "Rafa" has the immediate trigger of reminding me of "Rafa Nadal". LOL :D
ReplyDeleteAlyssa @ The Eater of Books!
Alyssa, you must check it out!! PILI PUSHING for the whole series as you can get your hands one them!!
DeleteIn my case, everytime I type Rafa, I end up typing Raffe and have to correct it! I guess my mind is already conditioned towards an awesome R-starting angel already! ;)
I have the first book of this series, and though one of my best friend love it, I still don't know if I'm going to read it (since I stopped reading angel books)... but I really want to give this series a try!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the quote, it's interesting!
I am not the biggest fan of angel books in general, Lis, but this... I'VE LOVED and highly recommend!
DeleteGlad to hear you loved it Pili even though you aren't the biggest fan of angel books! (I'm totally referring to your comment above for this). I find it funny how the love interest is called Rafa, reminds me of Raffe from another angel book ;)
ReplyDeleteAnd despite my "not being keen on angel books" that Raffe is part of a series about angels I absolutely adore too! And yeah, every time I typed Rafa in there, I actually typed Raffe and had to correct it! ;)
